Petition: Tell SEPTA to End the $1 Transfer Penalty

Sign the Petition to Support Free Transfers

SEPTA Key has made it much easier to pay for transit, but SEPTA has refused to eliminate one of the most inconvenient and counterproductive parts of their fare policy: the $1 transfer penalty.

Last year, 5th Square and Clean Air Council led a campaign pushing SEPTA to eliminate the transfer penalty when they voted on a new fare tariff, and now PlanPhilly reports that SEPTA management is considering doing just that in response to public demand and an internal push to improve bus service.

Sign our petition to tell SEPTA to give riders a break, and stop charging an extra $1 penalty to transfer between buses, subways, and trolleys.

When SEPTA charges an extra $1.00 for transfers, that's an unfair penalty for everyone whose home isn’t on the exact transit line as their job, family, school, grocery store, or place of worship. And it costs SEPTA more to run the system this way!

One SEPTA fare should cover your whole trip. With free transfers, every SEPTA rider would have the opportunity to access the whole city, on equal footing with every other rider.

If SEPTA were more efficient and my transfers would line up like the schedule reads without excuses for being late (manpower issues, cars blocking rails on all 5 southwest lines, mechanical issues etc… basically it’s never their fault that that are NEVER on schedule) then I don’t think I would mind, but I’ve been a regular SEPTA customer for over 10 years now and it’s nothing but a headache riding on SEPTA. They need to take lessons from NJ Transit and PATCO regarding their new (outdated) fare system that isn’t even fully functional. I’ll give this to SEPTA, they have finally stopped charging extra 50¢ on NHSL and the extra fares on the lines that run to King of Prussia. So, why not give up the transfers. How much does the printer get to manufacture the wasted paper those transfer books are printed on each and everyday for every bus and trolley? The cost has to be astronomical. I could go on forever about SEPTA and it’s lack of FRIENDLY customer service, but I’m sure that everyone who rides, especially whomever has put out this petition, has éncountered similar issues therefore, I will cease and dissist my rant because I’m preaching to the choir at this point.

Extra cost doesn’t allow children from low income families access higher learning activities with out school transportation. Either it be education events out side of school hours, or extra carricular activities.

Sherae Guy…….you guys are good at what you do. It’s a known fact that without you (Septa) many people would not be able to get to work, school, appointments and such. I remember a time when you could get a transfer to change between lines. Why not give back to the people because without them what do you have?

Only in Philadelphia is the public transportation system specifically designed to cost the lowest income riders more. From not having Transit purchase options in low income neighborhoods to reducing costs for suburban train riders significantly, Philly boasts the most Trumpesque system I have ever encountered. The transfer penalty is one of many fees designed to hurt those who need the system most.
