Petition: Tell SEPTA to End the $1 Transfer Penalty

Sign the Petition to Support Free Transfers

SEPTA Key has made it much easier to pay for transit, but SEPTA has refused to eliminate one of the most inconvenient and counterproductive parts of their fare policy: the $1 transfer penalty.

Last year, 5th Square and Clean Air Council led a campaign pushing SEPTA to eliminate the transfer penalty when they voted on a new fare tariff, and now PlanPhilly reports that SEPTA management is considering doing just that in response to public demand and an internal push to improve bus service.

Sign our petition to tell SEPTA to give riders a break, and stop charging an extra $1 penalty to transfer between buses, subways, and trolleys.

When SEPTA charges an extra $1.00 for transfers, that's an unfair penalty for everyone whose home isn’t on the exact transit line as their job, family, school, grocery store, or place of worship. And it costs SEPTA more to run the system this way!

One SEPTA fare should cover your whole trip. With free transfers, every SEPTA rider would have the opportunity to access the whole city, on equal footing with every other rider.

I have almost never been able to get to work and back without having to transfer. Please help our community members get to work for less!

i swear sometimes the buses/subs be taking whole fares instead of that $1 transfer fee. Does this happen to anyone else?

not exactly a “penalty”. Thank your lucky stars we aren’t charged one fare for each mode of travel we do use. “Charging people extra to do something they don’t want to do” is absurd. Not all the routes allow you a one seat ride! If the forefathers of our systems weren’t so stubborn, we would have had extensions to the el and the subway to places they never go. I do however support one fare from start to end of your journey and it can be done by way of this new SEPTA Key scheme.

The transfer charge make public transit too expensive for some (those who can least afford it) and should be eliminated. NYC allows transfers without an additional fee for within 2 hours.

I can ride from Frankford Ave to the stadiums on the subway system for $2.50, but to go from Pennsport to city hall costs $3.50? End transfer fees. Put some cash back in the pockets of those who need it most and really rely on the mass transit systems to get them around.

Ease of riding should be septa’s selling point, and paid transfers make that all the more difficult.
