5th Square Advocacy Supports The Philadelphia Transit Access Fund Proposed by Council Member Nicolas O’Rourke

Philadelphia, PA - 5th Square Advocacy proudly supports Council Member Nicolas O'Rourke's proposal to establish the Philadelphia Transit Access Fund. SEPTA is the backbone that allows Philadelphia to function, ensuring mobility for workers, students, and residents across the city and region. This vital initiative aims to expand access to affordable public transit for the city's lowest-income residents. Modeled after the city's existing Housing Trust Fund, this program would provide consistent, dedicated funding to ensure that transit remains accessible to those who need it the most, but can least afford it.

As currently proposed, the Transit Access Fund would maintain funding at or near the levels of the Zero Fare pilot program, continuing to provide crucial assistance to low-income Philadelphians living in households making up to 150% of the federal poverty level, which is less than $24,500 per year. This program is a crucial step in reducing barriers to opportunity, as access to low-cost, reliable transportation is one of the most effective and proven ways to lift individuals and families out of poverty.

Investments in reduced or no-fare transit programs have proven economic benefits by improving access to better jobs, healthcare, and other essential services. By ensuring stable funding for this program, Philadelphia can foster economic mobility while strengthening the city's workforce and communities.

"SEPTA is a lifeline for so many Philadelphians," said Alex Milone, co-chair of 5th Square Advocacy's Transit Committee, "By securing a permanent funding source to benefit low-income individuals access to public transportation, the city is not just investing in transportation - it is investing in it's people, in economic opportunity, and in a more equitable city that all Philadelphians will benefit from."

5th Square Advocacy urges Philadelphia City Council to advance this essential program and commit to ensuring that all Philadelphians - regardless of their income - can access the pubic transportation services they need to thrive.
