PHILADELPHIA -
“Last week, Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson introduced a resolution calling on the Committee for Transportation and Public Utilities to hold hearings on the feasibility of citywide daylighting, an emerging road safety initiative.
“Daylighting is a current best practice in roadway safety which enhances sight lines at intersections by building curbs or other physical infrastructure to prevent cars from illegally blocking corners. It has had positive effects on pedestrian safety in cities such as Hoboken, Jersey City and San Francisco.
“Daylighting intersections can and will save lives. This is done by increasing visibility for everyone on our streets, especially enabling drivers to see people entering a crosswalk.
“As reckless driving surges across the country and Philadelphia continues to see a disturbing trend of horrific pedestrian and cyclist deaths, 5th Square welcomes city-wide intersection daylighting as a critical component in the road safety tool kit and we applaud Council President Johnson for continuing the work to bring the city closer to its goal of zero roadway deaths.” says Chris Giuliano, 5th Square Organizer.
