Washington Ave Connector Statement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monday, January 6th, 2025

PHILADELPHIA —

Last Friday, a man was killed and a woman was injured as they attempted to walk across Washington Ave at Front Street. Just six months prior, a man in his 60s was struck and killed crossing the same intersection.

“These incidents underscore the urgent need for infrastructure improvements along this stretch of Washington Ave.” says Russell Richie, 5th Square Organizer.

“The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) and the City of Philadelphia need to move forward with the Washington Avenue Connector project. This project, aimed at transforming the corridor into a safer and more pedestrian-friendly space, would have addressed many of the hazardous conditions that contributed to these deaths.

“Improved crosswalks, traffic-calming measures, better lighting, and dedicated pedestrian pathways will address longstanding issues at this intersection, which serves as a vital link between neighborhoods and the Delaware River waterfront.

“Delays in awarding the contract left the area in its deteriorated state, with unclear pedestrian markings, high traffic speeds, and poor visibility.

“We urge Councilmember Squilla to expedite the process – ensuring that the DRWC and the City of Philadelphia begin construction immediately.

“The City must take action before another person is killed on this small stretch of Washington Ave.”
