🍻 TONIGHT: MEETUP AND PARKWAY UPDATE

Join us TONIGHT at 6pm for our next meetup in Center City!

We will be welcoming Nick Anderson, Executive Director of the Parkway Council, who will share updates on the current plans to redesign the Ben Franklin Parkway.

September 5th Square Meetup
September 30, 2025 at 6:00pm – 8pm
Resurrection Philadelphia, 123 S 17th St

These meet-ups are casual social gatherings, and are intended as a fun way for new and existing supporters to connect with other people involved with 5th Square and urbanist issues in Philadelphia, either professionally or in a volunteer/activist capacity, and learn more about what our all-volunteer organization is up to.

🏞️ DEMAND A SAFER FAIRMOUNT PARK

Since 2019, at least 41 people have been killed in car crashes in or adjacent to Fairmount Park.

We're joining with Philly Bike Action to call on city leaders to put a stop to this. Sign this petition to ensure people, not cars, are prioritized in Fairmont Park.

And on October 12th, join Philly Bike Action for a family-friendly event to call attention to unsafe conditions on Belmont Ave, where PBA and Bicycle Coalition member Harry Fenton was killed by a speeding driver earlier this month.

October 12 @ 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
West Fairmount Park (Exact location TBA)

❤️ THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING SAFE STREETS

Huge thank you to everyone who came to City Hall yesterday to testify before City Council in favor of several safe streets bills.

Though the bill to authorize a bike lane around City Hall was held, the rest of the bills we came to support (#250712#250718#250770were advanced which we couldn't have achieved without your help.

🏙️ OPEN STREETS

In Queen Village, 4th Street between Bainbridge and Catharine Streets will be car-free from 11am to 5pm on Saturday, October 11th and 18th. Attendees can enjoy expanded outdoor dining, shopping, extra seating, family-friendly entertainment, and musicians.

And on the other side of Broad, sections of Walnut and 18th Streets will be opened from 10am to 5pm on Sunday, October 5th and 12th as part of Center City District's West Walnut Open Streets.

📰 5TH SQUARE IN THE NEWS

KYW Newsradio / City Council committee advances bill to restore loading zones on Spruce and Pine streets

The residents who sued are still opposed, but Russell Richie, of Fifth Square, argued they’re in the minority.

“Results from hundreds of survey responses show overwhelming support for loading zones.”

🚨 ACTION ITEMS

🚲 Parking-Protected Bike Lane Petition

Parking-protected bike lanes are a great way to make our bikes lanes safer and lower stress, but they are illegal in PA! The Bicycle Coalition is fighting for their legalization. Sign their petition to show your support for safer bike lanes!

🚫 Grays Ferry Is Not a Parking Lot

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is proposing a 1,000-vehicle parking garage at 30th and Grays Ferry Avenue. This garage would be over 70 feet tall, reserved for employees, and would require a separate shuttle service. Sign our petition telling CHOP: Don't Treat Grays Ferry as a Parking Lot

🛣️ Stop I-95 Expansion

PennDOT is planning to expand I-95 in Center City and South Philly by adding lanes and new ramps. This will threaten the well-being of our neighborhoods by worsening air quality, increasing noise pollution, harming our access to the waterfront, and destroying sports facilities. To make matters worse, PennDOT has been deceitful about its engagement efforts.

Join us in telling PennDOT that highway expansion has no place in the core of Philadelphia by signing our petition.
