🚲🥳 NO MORE BIKE LANE PARKING!

We have a major victory to announce! After more than a decade of hard work by activists, it will soon be illegal for drivers to stop in bike lanes.

Last Thursday, City Council unanimously passed Bill 240657, which prohibits stopping in any bike lane citywide and increases fines for bike lane parking.

After Mayor Parker signs the bill, it will go into effect immediately. Thank you to Council President Johnson and Councilmember Gauthier for introducing the bill and all our activists for seeing this fight through to the finish line!

💰 ANOTHER OPTION TO FUND SEPTA

The fight to fund SEPTA became more challenging this past week as the PA legislature session ended without securing a funding source to stave off SEPTA's impending fiscal cliff

Not all hope is lost, however. Federal highway funding can be flexed to fund transit. This means we could redirect federal dollars away from unwanted projects like I-95 expansion and instead fund SEPTA.

Read more in this Op-Ed in the Inquirer: After legislative failure, Gov. Shapiro should ensure transit funding success | Opinion

SEPTA's funding crisis comes amidst news of a pending strike by TWU 234 as well as the resignation of SEPTA's general manager, Leslie Richards. See our full statement on her resignation and tenure at SEPTA here.

🏀🏗️ 76ERS ARENA SHOULD HAVE HOUSING

If the proposed 76ers arena on Market Street is getting built, we believe it should include housing.

Councilmember Squilla worked to remove the accompanying apartment tower because he claims that Chinatown residents said it “wasn’t affordable enough.”

However, both PCDC (Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation) and AAU (Asian Americans United) have stated that they are not opposed to the housing component, and in fact, asked for deeper affordability as a stretch goal.

See our full statement here.

🚲 47th St Bike Lane Petition

With the upcoming repaving of 47th St, Philly Bike Action is calling for traffic calming measures and the creation of a parking-protected bike lane along 47th St from Chestnut St to the Grays Ferry Bridge. Sign their petition here.

🛣️ Stop I-95 Expansion

PennDOT is planning to expand I-95 in Center City and South Philly by adding lanes and new ramps. This will threaten the well-being of our neighborhoods by worsening air quality, increasing noise pollution, harming our access to the waterfront, and destroying sports facilities. To make matters worse, PennDOT has been deceitful about its engagement efforts.

Join us in telling PennDOT that highway expansion has no place in the core of Philadelphia by signing our petition.
