Petition: Tell SEPTA to End the $1 Transfer Penalty

Sign the Petition to Support Free Transfers

SEPTA Key has made it much easier to pay for transit, but SEPTA has refused to eliminate one of the most inconvenient and counterproductive parts of their fare policy: the $1 transfer penalty.

Last year, 5th Square and Clean Air Council led a campaign pushing SEPTA to eliminate the transfer penalty when they voted on a new fare tariff, and now PlanPhilly reports that SEPTA management is considering doing just that in response to public demand and an internal push to improve bus service.

Sign our petition to tell SEPTA to give riders a break, and stop charging an extra $1 penalty to transfer between buses, subways, and trolleys.

When SEPTA charges an extra $1.00 for transfers, that's an unfair penalty for everyone whose home isn’t on the exact transit line as their job, family, school, grocery store, or place of worship. And it costs SEPTA more to run the system this way!

One SEPTA fare should cover your whole trip. With free transfers, every SEPTA rider would have the opportunity to access the whole city, on equal footing with every other rider.

Traveling in Europe, the mind boggles at the convenience, design and economy of their well-supported city transit systems that integrate beautifully into regional, national and international systems. Clearly we don’t live in a country that will support its public facilities in that way. So it’s doubly important that we implement good design and pricing policy to build ridership and deliver the benefit equitably across the population of the city. It’s unfair to penalize people, just because they don’t live where the transit-line design gives them a no-transfer ride. And the inefficiencies born of avoiding that payment are real and costs both SEPTA and the ridership. Transfers should be free.

People on the fringe of the city shouldn’t have to pay a penalty to access what downtown has to offer.

SEPTA, you should’ve gotten rid of this a long time ago.

It is important that SEPTA fares not ride on the backs of it’s Philadelphia ridership. As a group we are poorer, older and browner. Do not raise fares for disabled and elderly. Make Philly one zone, no transfers. Raise the rates of those who use our city for work and retreat to the suburbs they can afford.

We pay enough in regular base fair, to switch to another bus shouldn’t cost us anymore $$$$.
